Nearly 11,000 migrants and refugees were rescued in the Mediterranean Sea so far this week, on their way to Italy thanks to a massive effort by the Italian coastguard and navy that included more than 70 separate rescue operations on Monday and Tuesday, reports Think Progress.

Monday’s rescue operations saved close to 6,055 people— one of the highest numbers of people saved in a single day—30 miles north of Libya, while Tuesday’s operations saved over 4,650 people in the Strait of Sicily.
